Pancreas Protection: How to Guard Against This “Difficult” Organ

Published: June 14, 2026  |  Amcare Medical · Beijing
Quick Summary The pancreas is both a digestive and metabolic organ. It helps digest food through pancreatic juice and regulates blood glucose through endocrine cells. Most acute pancreatitis cases are mild, but about one-fifth may become moderate-severe or severe, progressing rapidly and potentially involving multiple organs.

What Does the Pancreas Do?

The pancreas lies deep in the abdomen, behind the stomach and close to the spine. It is about 12-15 cm long and is divided into the head, body, and tail.

It has both exocrine and endocrine functions. The exocrine part, which makes up most of the pancreas, secretes pancreatic juice to help digestion. The endocrine part, the pancreatic islets, helps regulate blood glucose.

Why Pancreatic Disease Needs Attention

Most acute pancreatitis cases are mild and recover with supportive treatment. However, about 20% may become moderate-severe or severe acute pancreatitis.

Severe pancreatitis can progress quickly and may involve the heart, kidneys, and other organs. It may cause pancreatic necrosis, secondary infection, systemic inflammatory response, and multiple organ failure.

Pancreas-Friendly Habits
  • Little or no alcohol
  • Avoid binge drinking
  • Eat regularly
  • Reduce high-fat and high-sugar foods
  • Avoid extremes of fasting or overeating
✦ Special Warning
  • Gallstones can trigger acute pancreatitis
  • Multiple small gallstones need attention
  • Regular checkups are important
  • Avoid abdominal trauma
  • Use potentially pancreas-damaging drugs only under medical advice

How to Protect the Pancreas

The pancreas does not like extremes. A healthy approach is not simply eating plain food or avoiding all meat. It needs regular, balanced nutrition and reduced stimulation from alcohol, high-fat meals, high-sugar foods, overeating, or long fasting.

People with gallstones should pay special attention because gallstones, especially multiple small stones, are a common trigger of acute pancreatitis. Regular evaluation of gallbladder and pancreatic health is important.

"Pancreas protection is about balance: regular meals, less alcohol, less overload, and early attention to gallstones."
